Two Types of Recyclable Metals

At Cash for Used Trucks, trucks aren’t the only thing we buy, sell and recycle. We also buy, sell and recycle scrap metal, so we thought it was only fitting to do a post on recycling metals. There are two types of metals to recycle- ferrous and non-ferrous. Let’s take a look at the two.

Ferrous Metals

Ferrous metals are used for things like ranch bring abouts, engines, autos, apparatuses for items like washers and dryers, stoves, coolers, machinery, etc. You’ll find some tools and equipment composed of both ferrous and non-ferrous metals like grass cutters.
Ferrous metal is distinctive from non-ferrous in the manner that the metal will stick to a magnet. Another way to tell if the item is made of ferrous metal is if there is rust on the metal. Let me explain a little deeper. Iron comprises ferrous metal or an iron mineral. When you place a magnet over the object or metal, the magnet will stick.
Now, for the rust. The second distinctive quality about ferrous metal is that with exposure to moisture and air, it will rust. Non-ferrous don’t rust. So, now you have non-ferrous metals don’t stick to a magnet, and they don’t rust because they are not susceptible to moisture and air. Ferrous metals are.
When you are gathering up your metals, you want a magnet in your pocket. Following is a list of some ferrous metals that are ideal to recycle.

  • Steel
  • Automobiles
  • Dishwashers, Washing Machines Dryers
  • Fridges and Stoves
  • Farm Machinery
  • Cast Iron Outdoor Railing
  • Cast Iron Patio Furniture
  • Sheet Metal
  • Steel Wheels
  • Lawn Mowers

NonFerrous Metals

As we mentioned earlier, non-ferrous metals don’t rust. Some do oxidise. Oxidation is simply the outer layer of the metal oxidises. Aluminum is a prime example of a non-ferrous metal that can oxidise. The aluminum will become white and flaky looking.
Following is a list of some nonferrous metals:

  • Aluminum
  • Stainless Steel
  • Copper
  • Platinum
  • Lead
  • Medal

So, where do you look for these metals? Let’s have a look.
Copper
Copper can be found in pipes and ventilations systems, coolers, iceboxes, etc. It can also be found in wiring, including Christmas tree lights. In ventilation units, there is a fair amount of copper and copper tubing.
Aluminum
Aluminum is found in great many objects like aluminum patio furniture, aluminum siding on the homes, aluminum jars, aluminum window trim, aluminum soda cans, etc. There are also many parts under the hood of an engine that are aluminum like the cooling condensers and radiator, manifolds and alternator, as well as many other parts, making an engine a great object to recycle.
Other non ferrous metals include:

  • Aluminum Cans
  • Aluminum Pots and Pans
  • Aluminum Patio Furniture
  • Aluminum Siding, Gutters and Downspouts
  • Bicycles
  • Auto Batteries
  • Aluminum Wheels
  • Aluminum Wire
  • Brass Fuacets, Decorative Items, Lamps
  • Cable, Fence and Wire
  • Copper
  • Copper and Brass Plumbing Pipes, Valve and Connections
  • Radiators
  • Christmas Lights
  • Electric Motors
  • Stainless Steel
  • Screen Doors

Safety, Safety, Safety
It is important to think safety when collecting metals as danger does lerk. Often, metal objects can have many sharp points and jagged edges as well as can be constructed with hazardous materials. Should you have a cut on the skin, an infection can easily occur. There are also airborne particles that can cause individuals to become ill. For instance, when looking for soda cans through the trash cans and bins, always wear thick gloves and protective gear like a dust mask. This is a safety precaution as many times, you don’t know what is in those junk piles.
Safety and protective attire is essential when looking for scrap metal. Your clothing should include thick gloves, a dust mask and eye goggles, as well as heavy shoes that are sturdy and protect the feet in the case that a heavy object lands on the foot. After you are done collecting scrap metal for the day, thoroughly wash the skin, especially your arms and hands with soap and water.
